61st Annual Meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society

Dear Members and Friends of ETS:

As Program Chairman for the annual meeting of the Evangelical Theological Society to be held November 18-20, 2009, in New Orleans, I am honored and delighted to invite you to attend its sessions in that great historic city and, if possible, prepare papers for presentation to the Society. The general theme is Personal and Social Ethics, one of obvious contemporary importance and sorely in need of the careful attention of theologians and Bible scholars. The plenary speakers are well-recognized in their fields of expertise and will add luster to a fine program of hundreds of other papers addressing ethics and a great variety of other topics of interest. The featured papers will be delivered by Drs. E. David Cook (Wheaton College); John Kilner (Trinity International University); Sam Kunhiyop (South African Theological Seminary); and Scott B. Rae (Talbot Theological Seminary).

At the appropriate time you will receive information about scheduling, accommodations, and other matters but for now I want to urge you to make your plans to come for an outstanding program.

Let me take this occasion also to remind the chairs of Study Groups and affiliated societies (ATS, EPS, NEAS) that they must submit to me their finished programs by March 1st in order to find a place in the overall program. This is earlier than in the past, but the deadline for paper submission has also been moved up, to February 15. This should give all of us more breathing room and less likelihood for snafus. Also, you are responsible to find moderators for each session who can properly introduce speakers, enforce time limits, entertain questions and answers, and take note of attendance. Finally, be sure to arrange with the hotels for any electronic devices that might be needed. Unfortunately, this cannot include power-point projectors because of their prohibitive cost.

Please pray that God will make of our conference more than just a matter of meeting around common interests. May it be a time that will redound to his glory and to the edification of the Church.

Sincerely,

Eugene H. Merrill
