The translation of ἀρσενοκοῖται in 1 Cor 6.9 by “homosexuals” (NASΒ, NLT) “homosexual offenders” (NIV), “homosexual pervert” (GNB), “behaves like a homosexual”(CEV) and “practicing homosexuals” (NET, ESV, NAB, TNIV) has been increasingly challenged as inaccurate. The wide range in rendering μαλακοί as “effeminate” (ASV, KJV, NASB), “sexual pervert” (RSV), “self-indulgent” (NJB), “men who practice homosexuality” (ESV), “homosexuals” (NKJ), “boy prostitutes (NAB), “male prostitutes” (NIV, NLT, NRSV, TNIV) and “passive homosexual partners” (NET) is equally problematic. This study seeks to examine ἀρσενοκοιται and μαλακοί in Hellenistic Greek usage, the syntax of the passage, and Greco-Roman mores with a view to determining a felicitous rendering.
