This is a study of Paul’s hermeneutics within his Second Temple (ST) hermeneutical milieu. The study reveals development in the under-standing of the Isaianic stone passages (quoted in Romans 9:33) beginning with the Septuagint through other ST literature to pre-Pauline Christianity. It also shows that ST exegetes saw historical correspondences in the outworking of unbelief/faith in the majority/remnant dialectics between biblical Israel and their own contemporaries. Similarly, it demonstrates a growing personalization of the stone motif through the ST era that eventuated in the ultimate appropriation of the stone motif by Jesus and its subsequent significance in the primitive Christian community. Hermeneutical trajectories are thus drawn from ST ex-egetes to Paul, and the contemporary significance of the study is hig-hlighted.
