Description:

This anthology is the first in a series of three monographs investigating the chronology of the Genesis flood. In this first volume the six contributors (five Hebraists and a geologist) develop new methodologies to ascertain the flow of time in biblical narrative, because their assessment is that previous efforts to arrive at a coherent chronology of the flood were hampered by the assumption that _wayyiqtol_ marks sequentiality. After marshaling a considerable weight of evidence to counter this assumption, new methodologies are presented, which are based on semantic analysis on the micro-level (innate to individual verb phrases), macro-level (relations between verbs), and the mega-level (potential motivators of dischronologization on the episodic, whole narrative, or even higher levels). The analysis is fully apprised of the latest linguistic study in these areas. Moreover, this analysis is set in the context of the geological issues pertinent to a global flood. In addition, the book includes a rigorous text-critical analysis of the flood narrative, which considers all the witnesses to the text, and a critical text resulting from this analysis, is offered. In particular, the five fixed dates recounted in the flood narrative are ascertained based on the textual evidence. Also a segmentation of the narrative into episodes and scenes is supplied, which draws on theme tracing theory involving topic and focus. Furthermore, the work explores the various significations of _wayehi_, which are crucial to understanding the structure and temporal profile of the narrative. And finally, the work includes a synthesis of the studies of flood chronology from Luther until the present. Forewords by Eugene Merrill and John Morris. Includes a glossary and three indexes. 854 pages, softcover.
