Description

This is an entry written for the Dictionary of Christianity and Science. It first provides the history of sociology starting with Auguste Comte as well as the history of American sociology, and then discusses “Christian sociology,” which is a systematic study of the social order within a Christian framework. Finally, it discusses a typology of five different strategies of appropriation of sociology by theologians and concludes that theologians continue to appropriate sociology in effort to make theology relevant to modern society in spite of the difficulties and potential risks.
