Literature of the Bible

Overview

The Literature of the Bible study group exists to promote evangelical scholarship that explores the literary features of the biblical texts. It is an interdisciplinary study group, integrating biblical scholars with special interest in literary studies and literary scholars with special interest in the Bible. The biblical texts were written in a variety of literary genres, all of which have distinctive features that entail hermeneutical implications. The exegetical preparation of most biblical scholars features philology, grammar, history, and theology, but close literary reading is often given secondary attention. On the other hand, scholars trained in the field of literature are typically immersed in genres such as narrative and poetry that sensitize them to the literary qualities of texts. By bringing together the two specializations of biblical studies and literary studies, this study group endeavors to draw from the strengths of both fields as it examines the Bible.
