Northwest Region Meeting Call for Papers
December, 2009
Dear Fellow Member of ETS
Our 2010 Northwest section meetings will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Northwest Baptist Seminary, 4301 N. Stevens, Tacoma, WA. Registration will begin at 8:30 and the plenary session will begin at 9:00. Registration will be $7.00.
Our plenary session will feature a discussion of biblical perspectives on the nature of human consciousness. Advances in brain science have renewed the debate over whether human beings have souls, or whether the properties of what we presume is the soul are merely brain functions. This has an obvious impact on how we understand scriptural language concerning body, soul, and spirit. Our speakers will be Nancey Murphy, Professor of Christian Philosophy at Fuller Seminary, author of Bodies and Souls, or Spirited Bodies?, John Cooper, professor of philosophical theology at Calvin Seminary, author of Body, Soul and Life Everlasting: Anthropology and the Monism-Dualism Debate, and Marc Cortez, assistant professor of theology and academic dean at Western Seminary, author of Embodied Souls, Ensouled Bodies.
This is a formal call for papers. We would like to have you contribute to evangelical scholarship in the Northwest. Please submit the title of your paper along with an abstract to any one of the sectional officers as soon as possible. For obvious reasons, it needs to be in our hands no later than Monday, January 25. We will use the abstracts to select the papers for presentation at the meeting. Include your telephone number so we can contact you.
Thank you for your support for ETS. We look forward to your participation on February 27.
Sincerely,
