Information for applicants
The Doctrinal Basis

The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written and is therefore inerrant in the autographs.
God is a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each an uncreated person, one in essence, equal in power and glory.

For the purpose of advising members regarding the intent and meaning of the reference to biblical inerrancy in the ETS Doctrinal Basis, the Society refers members to the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy (1978). The case for biblical inerrancy rests on the absolute trustworthiness of God and Scripture's testimony to itself. A proper understanding of inerrancy takes into account the language, genres, and intent of Scripture. We reject approaches to Scripture that deny that biblical truth claims are grounded in reality.

Full Membership ($50 USD)

From ETS bylaws: The Ph.D., Th.D., or other research doctorate related to biblical or theological studies from an accredited institution shall ordinarily be required for full membership in the Society. In exceptional instances, an individual who lacks the Ph.D., Th.D., or qualified research doctorate may be eligible for full membership upon the approval of the membership committee based on similar qualifications.

"Similar qualifications" include publications in the area of biblical or theological studies in an academic journal or publishing house, as well as teaching in the area of biblical or theological studies.

Additionally, eligibility for membership is based on earned degrees not on honorary degrees or on completed coursework.

Associate Membership ($45 USD)

From ETS bylaws: Associate members shall be those who may not qualify for full membership but are in sympathy with the scholarly and theological purposes of the Society. They are to be accepted on the basis of an application, their signature affirming the Doctrinal Basis, and approval of the Executive Director. They shall be nonvoting members and subject to the same requirements as full members.

Additionally, associate members typically do not present papers at the annual meeting, unless invited to do so by a program unit.

ETS welcomes those who are interested in evangelical scholarship as associate members.

Student Membership ($30 USD)

From ETS bylaws: Student members shall be those who are in college or graduate school and are in sympathy with the scholarly and theological purposes of the Society. They are to be accepted on the basis of an application, their signature affirming the Doctrinal Basis, and approval of the Executive Director. They shall be nonvoting members and subject to the same requirements as full members.

In your application, under "present position," please indicate the degree program in which you are currently enrolled. Student members are non-voting members. Additionally, only student members currently enrolled in a PhD program are eligible to submit paper proposals for the annual meetings. All student proposal submissions must be accompanied by the recommendation of a professor familiar with the proposed research.
