Summary: The Director of Library Services is responsible for the overall direction of the library system for the Seminary within the Seminary’s policies, procedures, and supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are considered essential to the job. With or without reasonable accommodation, qualified individuals must have the ability to:

  • Formulate and advocate policies to develop and maintain Library Services in support of teaching, learning, and research in the disciplines relevant to the professional and academic degree programs offered by the Seminary.
  • Plan, organize, select, motivate, evaluate, determine, and recommend training of the staff, oversee the functions of the department including work allocation and problem-solving, and provide routine management reports to the VPAS regarding the performance of the department.
  • Serve as technical consultant to Regional Campus Directors in areas of budgeting, collection development, accreditation issues, and employment; as resource person to the students, faculty, staff, and administration in the making, communicate, interpret, and implement decisions relating to Library Services; and, serve on faculty committees and councils as assigned by the Vice President.
  • Develop and work cooperatively with Regional Directors on respective campus library budgets.
  • Serve or appoint qualified designate as the seminary representative to the various library associations.
  • Work with designated management to negotiate or arrange external contractual relationships with book vendors, periodical agencies, binderies, automation vendors, online services, and library networks, and cooperatives.
  • Supervise the repair, maintenance, and security of library collections and equipment at the ONT campus. Oversee the development and preservation of special collections including but not limited to rare book collection and archival materials; and, oversee and provide consultation to regional library staff relating to the instruction of library patrons (including the orientation of new students and faculty members) in the effective use of the library.
  • Work with Advancement Services in seeking funds for library endowment and library projects approved by the Administration of the Seminary; and, with the appropriate Seminary departments/campuses, toward library building modification, renovation, or other construction.
  • Review selection aids to improve or update the library collection soliciting faculty participation in selection and/or deletion of material to be added to the Library collection.
  • Evaluate requests for library materials, based on the Collection Development Policy and the mission of the Seminary.
  • Account for gifts-in-kind received by the library system and determine their inclusion in the library collection or disposition as outlined in the Collection Development Policy; and, notify management of gifts to the Library.
  • Perform additional duties as required by management.
