Wycliffe Hall is seeking to appoint a Tutorial Fellow in World Christianity to play a vital role in the Hall’s vibrant community. This is an opportunity for an experienced theological educator to train ordained and lay leaders for the Church, for the academy, and for wider roles in society. It also provides opportunity to travel to develop our global relationships in the majority world.
Wycliffe Hall is an Evangelical College in the heart of Oxford and is a Permanent Private Hall of the University of Oxford, committed to excellence in teaching and research. Our vision is to see the nations transformed by the gospel, for which we are renewing Christian leaders in prayer, character, preaching and thinking. We have around 110 students, of whom about 50 are Church of England ordinands. Students study for undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications from the certificate level to the doctorate, and come from a wide variety of backgrounds.
The post is full-time contract though applicants wishing to teach part-time would be welcome. The salary is £33,700, plus £15,000 per annum housing allowance for those resident full-time in Oxford or nearby.

Main areas of responsibility:
Teaching:
• Providing lectures and seminars within the field of World Christianity (defined below) for a range of papers in the Bachelor of Theology suite
• Marking and examining for Oxford University Department of Continuing Education (OUDCE) and others, as required
• Other teaching within the postholder’s specialism as reasonably required by the Hall
• Willing to teach in, and develop our global relations in, the majority world
• Carrying out and disseminating academic research in World Christianity or closely related disciplines
• Participating in Hall-Wide Managerial Meetings and Tutors’ Meetings
• Participating in Oxford University’s Faculty of Theology and Religion, where appropriate, for example by examining or supervising graduate students.
Administration:
• Some administrative responsibilities, to be agreed: for example, acting as a Course Director
Spiritual formation:
• Taking a full part in the worshipping life of the Hall when in Oxford, including preparing for and leading worship
• Preaching and presiding in Chapel
• Participating in, and where appropriate, leading College missions
Essential:
• A doctorate in an area of World Christianity*
• Ability to teach students with clarity, sympathy, and enthusiasm
• Experience of research in an area of World Christianity
• Ability to inspire and encourage students for leadership, mission, and ministry
• Commitment to the evangelical ethos of the Hall, and the ability to relate well to students from a wide variety of backgrounds
• Commitment to training women and men for ministry in the Church of England
• Commitment to investing in the education and formation of students
• Proven ability to handle multiple complex demands
• Strong team worker
Desirable:
• Ordained in the Anglican Communion and ready to play an active role in the life of the Church
• Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and supervision
• Experience in mentoring people preparing for new ministries
• A record of significant publication in an area of World Christianity
* World Christianity “encompasses analysis of the histories, practices, and discourses of Christianity as is found on six continents.”1 In terms of content, “World Christianity” is not a substitute for “Third World Christianity” or “non‐Western Christianity.” Yet the field does reflect a particular interest of the West in “under‐represented and marginalized Christian communities, and this will necessarily result in a greater degree of attention being paid to Asian, African, and Latin American contexts, and the experience of women globally.”’ (Lamin Sanneh and Michael McClymond, The Wiley Blackwell Companion to World Christianity, Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell, 2016, 6)
There is a Genuine Occupational Requirement (GOR) that the postholder is a Christian woman or man, being in full sympathy with the ethos and aims of Wycliffe Hall. Regulation 7(2)a of the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 applies.

Remuneration:
The salary provided on Wycliffe’s scale, linked to both the Lichfield Scale and the University of Oxford, is £33,700 as of 1st April 2023, plus £15,000 housing allowance per annum for those resident full-time in Oxford or nearby. This post is offered subject to the satisfactory completion of a 6-month probationary period and the capability and disciplinary provisions set out in the employee handbook.
Pension:
In the case of an ordained person, the employee will usually be a member of the Church of England Pension Scheme, and the College will be the responsible body for contributions. In the case of a lay appointee, an amount equal to 20% of the salary would be payable to the Hall’s Group Personal Private Pension scheme.
Holidays:
30 days per year, in accordance with the College Holiday Policy, in addition to public holidays, which if these fall during College term, shall be taken at an agreed time during vacations. Study leave Currently Tutorial Fellows are normally provided with study leave of 4 months in a three-year period.
Research Grant:
A generous research allowance is provided, covering both conference attendance and book purchases.
Meals in College:
The appointee will be entitled to free College meals except when the kitchen is closed.
Location:
The normal place of work is Wycliffe Hall, 52-54 Banbury Road, Oxford. Arrangements may be made for someone living in the majority world and being in Wycliffe Hall for one or two terms per year.
General:
The appointment will be subject to the provision of proof of the right to work in the UK.
