The target passage which features Paul’s use of ἀλληγορεύμενα provides an occasion for an essay that addresses large and complex issues concerning the New Testament’s uses of the Old Testament. The essay makes a significant original contribution that endeavors to take seriously how Paul’s appeal to the Abraham narrative of Genesis is simultaneously rooted in history and regards the Abraham narrative as embedded with symbolic features to which he appeals in Galatians 4:21-31.
