Scope of Responsibilities:
The dean has the primary responsibility to develop a strategic vision, provide leadership, and manage educational programs that serve the students of the School of Ministry Studies (SOMS). The School of Ministry Studies consists of undergraduate and graduate programs (including the ATS accredited seminary). The seminary programs include its doctoral programs, residential master’s programs, and it competency-based theological education program, Deploy. Other SOMS programs include on-line master’s programs and all ministry-related undergraduate majors. The dean is responsible to grow the school’s enrollments and increase academic quality while overseeing the school’s financial performance. This individual also represents the School of Ministry Studies to constituent audiences in ways that support the institution’s mission, vision, and educational values. The position is a 12-month administrative appointment with the dean holding faculty rank and teaching as determined by the needs of the school.
Essential Responsibilities:
1. Lead the School of Ministry Studies. This includes:
a. Casting vision for the future.
b. Planning for strategic change.
c. Empowering the seminary to fulfill its educational mission and meet its goals successfully.
2. Represent the School of Ministry Studies to internal and external constituents.
a. Serve as an advocate and voice of the school to the rest of Grace Schools.
b. Network with key church leaders and others through speaking and preaching engagements.
3. Grow the School of Ministry Studies’ enrollment.
a. Provide leadership and input to overall marketing efforts on behalf of the school’s graduate
seminary.
b. Collaborate with the seminary’s director of blended programs to increase the number of
residential students involved in those programs.
c. Collaborate with the seminary’s Deploy CBTE leadership to recruit additional churches and
students for that program.
d. Collaborate with the dean of the School of Professional and Online Education to develop new
programs and recruit new students for on-line programs.
4. Manage resources in collaboration with the associate dean. This includes: a. Hiring and supervising faculty and supporting faculty development.
b. Overseeing program and curriculum development.
c. Overseeing accreditation efforts, loads, schedules, and budget management.
5. Provide general oversight and supervision for all of the school’s staff, including but not limited to the
associate dean, director of Deploy, and the director of blended programs.
6. Serve as a member of the Provost Council.
Secondary Responsibilities:
1. As requested, support advancement efforts to raise funds for the school and especially the seminary.
2. Engage in classroom teaching as time allows and as mutually agreed upon with the Provost.
3. Serve on institutional committees as time allows.
4. Attend relevant professional meetings such as ATS, HLC, ETS, SBL and relevant discipline specific
conferences.

Qualifications:
Minimum:
A seminary master’s degree and a doctorate in a field relevant to theological education.
Ample and current evidence of participation in a home local church (Note: The Dean must join a Charis Fellowship church in the vicinity of Winona Lake after hire).
Ability to clearly articulate and demonstrate support for the School of Ministry Studies’ mission to a variety of internal and external audiences.
Demonstrated ability to promote innovation and lead change.
Demonstrated ability to work, lead, and teach in a culturally diverse environment, to build a culturally diverse team, and to network with culturally diverse churches.
Commitment to and support of online education and competency-based theological education (CBTE).
Clear and effective communication, including verbal, written, and listening skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaboratively work and lead.
Demonstrated organizational skills, including problem solving and attention to detail. Demonstrated managerial skills in hiring, budget advocacy and management, personnel supervision, and ability to handle confidential information.
Mature Christ follower and wholehearted agreement with Grace’s Covenant of Faith and a commitment to live by the Statement on Community Lifestyle Expectations.

Preferred:
A master of divinity degree and doctoral degree in a seminary-related academic discipline (Old Testament, New Testament, Theology, Church History etc.) strongly preferred.
Experience as a faculty member having served as a department chair or in another academic leadership position strongly preferred with at least six years of experience in a seminary or university.
Pastoral/professional church staff or other vocational ministry experience strongly preferred. Demonstrated abilities in research, scholarship, and publication.
General working knowledge of CBTE and/or on-line education.
Intercultural experience, including intercultural educational endeavors.
Some knowledge of higher education accreditation matters, including regional accreditation and the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) preferred but not necessary.
