Adoniram Judson’s 1840 translation of the Bible into Burmese remains the most widely used version in modern Myanmar. In a covering letter sent to his supporting churches in New England with some copies of the Judson Bible he mentioned how he had in earlier editions used Johann Griesbach’s critical Greek NT, but had been suspicious of it and abandoned it in the final edition. This article compares Judson’s 1832 edition with the final 1840 edition of the Burmese NT to see how they differ in text critical decisions and concludes with the reasons Judson was suspicious of Griesbach’s text.
