2021 Annual Meeting

Christian History & Thought Since 1700

2021 ETS Theme

Christian History and Thought has chosen the following topic for the theme of its invited session in 2021: “J. I. Packer: Retrospect and Prospect.” Packer is well known among evangelicals for his books “Knowing God” (1973) and “A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life” (1990), yet the details of his life, ministry, and legacy are not as widely appreciated. With this in mind, our session seeks to look back on specific aspects of his theology and ministry and look forward to ways that his work might inform the future of evangelicalism. The following scholars will be presenting: Don Payne: Associate Professor of Theology, Denver Seminary; Joel Scandrett: Assistant Professor of Historical Theology, Trinity School for Ministry; Paul House: Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School; Ken Stewart: Emeritus Professor of Theological Studies, Covenant College.

For its Open Session, Christian History and Thought welcomes an eclectic mix of proposals falling within our program domain: post-Reformation studies, European Pietist movements, Evangelical Leaders, Movements & Awakenings since 1700, the history of Missions since the Puritan Age, and developments in theology. Let us hear from you when ETS issues its call for papers! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the CHT chair, Robert Caldwell (rcaldwell@swbts.edu).
