62nd Annual Meeting Call for Papers

Atlanta, Georgia
November 17-19, 2010

The theme for the annual meeting this year is “Justification by Faith.” The plenary speakers will be Pastor John Piper (Pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Minneappolis), the Rt Revd N. T. Wright (Bishop of Durham), and Dr. Frank Thielman (Presbyterian Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School). In addition to our usual plenary sessions, this year’s meeting features a two-hour panel discussion with the presenters on Friday morning.

Members of the society are invited to submit proposals for papers to be read on or related to this year’s conference theme. In addition to this, proposals related to Bible, Theology, or one of the program unit themes are welcome as well. Please keep in mind, as you prepare your proposal, that each session is 40 minutes in length. Thus your proposed paper should be of sufficient length to be read in 30 minutes, with the remaining time in the session alloted for Q&A.

Proposals will be accepted online beginning February 1, 2010. The deadline for receiving proposals this year is March 31. Please note that this is a month and a half later than in previous years. Because of that, this deadline is firm. Any proposal received after that date will likely not make it onto the program. Late proposals will still be considered and, if accepted, will be placed in a queue of papers to be inserted into the program only if there are cancellations.

Please note the following important change in the process for submitting a paper proposals:

  • All paper proposals must be submitted online at the ETS website.
  • To submit your proposal, click on the “Submit a Paper Proposal” link at left. (You must be logged in.)
  • For step by step instructions, please consult The Paper Proposal Guide.
  • You will be asked to submit your paper title, a 100-200 word abstract of the contents of the paper (if your abstract has Greek or Hebrew, it can be uploaded), and an indication of the paper’s topic.

Program units (sections, study groups, and consultations) oversee sessions with invited papers. If you are presenting an invited paper, you will still need to input your paper information on the ETS website. Electronic collection of information through the proposal system is designed to streamline the production of the printed program and to facilitate communication with presenters. As such all presenters, including those preparing invited papers and members of the affiliated societies (ATS, EPS, NEAS) should input their information online.

Please note that all paper proposals are limited to full members and doctoral students. Proposals from doctoral students require the professor's recommendation (which can be uploaded on the website). Affiliated society sessions are limited to affiliated society members or their invited guests.

The program units and the Program Chair (in consultation with a group of reviewers) will select the best proposals submitted for scheduling into the limited times and space we have available. We are anticipating many proposal submissions this year. If your proposal is not accepted for the annual meeting, please consider submitting it to one of the regional meetings.
